New CPD standards for teachers

The CPD standard published by the DfE  in July 2016. Following widespread consultation and analysis of existing evidence on effective teacher professional development and learning, the panel distilled out an essential message for teachers, leaders and policy makers. If teachers are to develop their practice to be more effective for the learners they serve, they need CPD which adheres to the five core principles below:

1. Professional development should have a focus on improving and evaluating pupil outcomes.

2. Professional development should be underpinned by robust evidence and expertise.

3. Professional development should include collaboration and expert challenge.

4. Professional development programmes should be sustained over time.

And all this is underpinned by, and requires that:

5. Professional development must be prioritised by school leadership.
